The Surprising Truth About Sex in China, Korea, and Japan                                                                                                #Truthaboutsex #culturesex

Cultural, social, and economic factors influence sexual behavior in East Asia. While there are similarities due to shared historical and cultural influences (like Confucianism), each country—China, South Korea, and Japan—has distinct dating and relationship norms.

China 🇨🇳

Traditional Values and Modernization: China is experiencing a significant shift. While traditional values emphasize premarital chastity and marriage within one's social and ethnic group, younger generations, particularly in major cities, are increasingly influenced by Western norms.

This has led to a rise in dating apps and a greater acceptance of premarital sex, though the average number of partners remains lower than in Western countries.

  • Gender Differences: A study in a 2017 issue of the Journal of Sex Research found that urban Chinese men, on average, reported more lifetime sexual partners than women. This is a common finding across many cultures.

  • Marriage Pressure: The strong cultural emphasis on marriage and family can also influence partner count. Many young adults face immense pressure from their parents to marry by a certain age, which can lead them to seek long-term relationships rather than engaging in casual dating.

South Korea 🇰🇷

Conservative with a Modern Twist: South Korea is a society of striking contrasts. It is technologically advanced and globally influential through K-pop and K-dramas, yet it retains deeply conservative social norms, especially regarding sexuality.

The concept of "sundo," or a woman's sexual purity, still holds some influence.

  • Age of First Sexual Intercourse: South Koreans tend to have their first sexual experience later than their Western counterparts.

  • Relationship Focus: A study by the Korean Institute for Health and Social Affairs found that a significant portion of young Koreans are more interested in dating for marriage than for casual encounters. This focus on serious, long-term relationships often leads to a lower number of lifetime partners.

  • Economic Factors: The economic challenges, high cost of living, and immense pressure to succeed professionally in South Korea have led many young adults to delay marriage and childbearing, but not necessarily to increase their number of sexual partners.

Japan 🇯🇵

The "Soshoku Danshi" (Herbivore Men) Phenomenon: Japan's sexual and dating landscape is unique. A notable trend is the rise of "soshoku danshi" (herbivore men)—men who are not interested in sex, dating, or marriage.

This phenomenon is often attributed to economic stagnation and a disinterest in traditional masculine roles.

  • Low Sexual Activity: A survey by the Japan Family Planning Association found a significant percentage of young Japanese people reporting they were not having sex. This trend has been a subject of national concern, as it contributes to Japan's declining birth rate.

  • Disengagement: The general disengagement from romantic relationships and dating, particularly among young men, contributes to a lower number of sexual partners. While casual sex exists, the prevalence of "soshoku danshi" and the overall decline in sexual activity among young people makes Japan an outlier among developed nations.
